NEW DELHI: India awaits its Ayodhya moment on Thursday, almost 18 years after the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992 that placed the country on a communal volcano which has periodically erupted from time to time. Today, individuals, parties and organizations who appealed for peace, hope the court verdict won't lead to another eruption.
At the end of the long-drawn judicial process stretching back to 1949, the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court will pronounce its verdict at 3.30pm on the Ayodhya title suits — the first such order on the dispute. It may not resolve the row over whether a temple predated the mosque at the disputed site, but will certainly cast some light on the title claims.
Given the emotive nature of the dispute, the Centre has cranked up its vigil, and has also goaded states vulnerable to communal tensions to do so. But there was also a hope that the moment will pass off without causing the sort of turbulence triggered by the Ram Janmabhoomi campaign and the Babri demolition.
The optimism stems chiefly from two factors: The issue has lost the potency it once had. It is also felt that while many of the partisans in the temple-mosque dispute have moved on, the youth have only a faint memory of the wrenching fight for the disputed site.

Redknapp: Van der Vaart is key player in Tottenham's season
(CNN) -- Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has told CNN his Dutch playmaker Rafael Van der Vaart is key to the English club's fortunes this season.
The midfielder was signed from Real Madrid in a dramatic, multi-million dollar switch just minutes before the European transfer window slammed shut earlier this month.
Van der Vaart found himself surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu under new coach Jose Mourinho but he has been in sparkling form for the Premier League club.
Redknapp admits the 27-year-old was in need of a confidence boost upon his arrival in north London but says he will be a vital player as his side prepare to host their first ever Champions League tie at White Hart Lane.
Before the clash with Dutch champions FC Twente, Redknapp told CNN: "Van der Vaart was, if you like, a bit part player at Real Madrid. He wasn't in the team, he was on the bench and his confidence was low.
"He's come here and we've made him feel very important. He's a key player in our team and we base a lot of our game around how he plays and where we play him.
"We look to get him on the ball and lots of our play comes from him so I think that's important for him. Confidence wise that will do him the world of good to make him feel very important and a good player in our team."
The former Ajax and Hamburg star has already made an impact, scoring his first goal in Tottenham's Premier League victory over Wolves and setting one up for Peter Crouch in the 2-2 draw with Werder Bremen in their opening Champions League tie.
Redknapp told CNN of the frantic dash to complete the signing as the clock ticked towards the transfer deadline on September 1.
"It was a late, late shout to be honest," he explained. "It was transfer deadline day at four o'clock I got the phone-call from the chairman to say 'I've got a present for you.'
"I said 'What's that' and he said 'Van der Vaart on loan, would you be interested?' and I said 'Yeah that would be a great loan signing' so that's how I left it.
"About five o'clock it turned out it wasn't possible and the chairman came back and said 'Look, I've got a chance to buy him at a good price.' I didn't push him to be honest, I don't want to push him to buy anybody, I didn't want to spend his money."
Having become the first team outside the recognized top four in England to make the group stages of Europe's premier club competition since Newcastle United in 2003, Redknapp must now make sure Spurs' domestic form doesn't suffer as a result.
He said: "It's a difficult one -- it's that juggling act every game -- you want to do well in both of them but in the Champions League we want to have a run.
"We've got into the group stage from that scary knock-out game with Young Boys in Berne (Tottenham won 6-3 on aggregate) and now we'd like to get into the next group if we can -- that would be a good achievement for us in our first season."

Lindsay Lohan starting rehab Monday
Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- Actress Lindsay Lohan planned to check herself into a substance abuse rehab program Monday, a source close to the actress said.
The source did not reveal which rehab program Lohan had chosen.
Lohan's entry into rehab comes three days after a Los Angeles, California, judge ordered her to jail without bail in the wake of a failed drug test. She spent just 14 hours in jail because another judge allowed her to post a bond Friday evening.
She spent 23 days in a court-ordered rehab program at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center last month, following 13 days in a Los Angeles County jail.
"Substance abuse is a disease, which unfortunately doesn't go away over night," Lohan wrote in a September 17 Twitter message. "I am working hard to overcome it and am taking positive steps."
Her father, Michael Lohan, has been urging his daughter to go to rehab voluntarily.
"Finally, they listened to me," he said Sunday.
He said on Friday that he was praying that defense lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley "does the right thing and advises her to go right into rehab now, and show the judge she's serious, because in 30 days when she goes back before the judge he can do whatever he wants."
Lohan posted a $300,000 bail and was released from jail late Friday night, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department said.
A judge granted Lohan bail Friday night, overturning a decision earlier in the day that sent the actress to jail until a probation revocation hearing four weeks away, a court spokesman said.
The bail terms required Lohan to be fitted with a SCRAM alcohol-detection bracelet, Los Angeles County Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini said.
Judge Patricia Schnegg granted Lohan's bail after Holley filed documents just before court closed Friday afternoon, Parachini said.
Judge Eldin Fox ordered the preliminary revocation of Lohan's probation Friday morning based on a probation report saying she tested positive for controlled-substance use.
The probation revocation hearing was set for October 22.
Lohan was arrested twice in 2007 on charges of driving under the influence, and in the second incident, she was charged with cocaine possession.
The first arrest came after Lohan lost control of her Mercedes-Benz convertible and struck a curb in Beverly Hills, California.

Facebook founder to announce $100M donation
New York (CNN) -- Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg will appear on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" Friday to announce that he is donating $100 million toward improving public schools in Newark, New Jersey.
Newark Mayor Cory Booker and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will also appear.
According to an official familiar with the agreement, Zuckerberg's donation will be the first installment from a foundation financed by Zuckerberg and focused on bettering education.

Jerusalem (CNN) -- Suggesting that Russian immigrants in Israel pose an obstacle to a peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians, former U.S. President Bill Clinton stepped into the mire of Middle Eastern politics this week, prompting a wave of criticism from Israeli politicians.
Clinton, speaking at a panel discussion of his Clinton Global Initiative on Tuesday, told audience members: "An increasing number of the young people in the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] are the children of Russians and settlers, the hardest-core people against a division of the land. This presents a staggering problem. It's a different Israel. Sixteen percent of Israelis speak Russian."

Sharansky's response, according to Clinton, was, "I can't vote for this, I'm Russian. ... I come from one of the biggest countries in the world to one of the smallest. You want me to cut it in half. No, thank you."
Clinton went on to say that Sharansky "was nice about it; a lot of them aren't," referring to Russian immigrants' attitudes toward land-for-peace proposals.
In a statement to Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Sharansky denied ever making such comments to Clinton and added, "I am particularly disappointed by the president's casual use of inappropriate stereotypes about Israelis, dividing their views on peace based on ethnic origins. Obama, Wen huddle in a side meeting at U.N.
United Nations (CNN) -- President Barack Obama urged Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to speed up the revaluation of his nation's currency, telling him in a two-hour meeting Thursday that the slow pace of reforms was affecting both the global and U.S. economies, a top U.S. aide said.
The talks on the sidelines of this week's U.N. General Assembly opening also covered security issues including Iran, Sudan and the dispute between China and Japan -- a major U.S. ally -- regarding the South China Seas, said Jeff Bader, Obama's special assistant and senior director for Asian affairs.
Most of the focus was on economic issues, Bader said, because Wen is responsible for managing the Chinese economy, the world's second-largest behind the United States.
On Wednesday night, Wen said in a speech to the business community in New York that China will continue reforming and opening its markets under a policy it started in 1978 by officially ending decades of isolation.
However, demands by U.S. lawmakers that China revalue its currency by more than 20 percent would bankrupt Chinese companies and lead to "major unrest" in his country, the premier said.
Also Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives considered a bill to allow the United States to retaliate against China's handling of its currency. Some trade leaders say Beijing has suppressed the yuan's value, giving its exporters an unfair advantage in world trade.
In Thursday's talks, Obama noted that "there had not been much movement since" China said in June that it would implement a more liberal currency policy, Bader said. The president told Wen that the Chinese inaction "had consequences for the global economy and the U.S. economy," according to Bader.
Obama said the United States "looked for a more rapid and significant revaluation in coming months," Bader said.
Bader declined to characterize Wen's response to Obama, saying only that Wen "did reiterate Chinese intention to continue to with reform to their exchange system."
In remarks to reporters, Obama and Wen emphasized cooperation between their governments and the need for frank discussions on their differences.
"We have worked together on a whole range of issues," Obama said, citing the reaction to the financial crisis and global recession of recent years.
Obama said the countries also have cooperated extensively on issues of nuclear nonproliferation and have engaged in "very frank discussions and cooperated on issues of climate change."
"Obviously, we continue to have more work to do," Obama said. "On the economic front, although the world economy is now growing again, I think it's going to be very important for us to have frank discussions and continue to do more work cooperatively in order to achieve the type of balance and sustained economic growth that is so important and that we both signed up for in the context of the G-20 framework."
Obama praised Wen for "extraordinary openness and cooperation with us as we try to strengthen the relationship between our two countries, a relationship that is based on cooperation, on mutual interest, on mutual respect."
Wen noted that "common interests far outweigh our differences" and that despite "disagreements of one kind or another between our two countries, the differences can be resolved."
"Our two countries can have cooperation on a series of major international issues and regional hot-spot issues," Wen said. "We have cooperation on tackling the financial crisis and meeting the climate challenge. China and the United States have also embraced an even closer and bigger relationship in the fields of public finance, financial industry and economic cooperation and trade."

4 dead in Seattle shooting; 'My mom has gone crazy,' survivor says
(CNN) -- Five people were shot -- four fatally -- at a Seattle, Washington, home Thursday, according to police.
Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel told CNN that a relative of some of the victims who was not in the house believed that a 59-year-old woman, who was the mother of some of the victims, committed the shooting. He told CNN affiliate KOMO TV that the shooter was an Asian female, and that the three other victims are believed to be family members or relatives.
Pugel also confirmed for CNN that the dead include two females believed to be in their late teens, a male believed to be in his 30s and the woman believed to be the shooter.
There was one survivor, according to Pugel, a woman believed to be in her 30s. Pugel told CNN affiliate KIRO TV that she was undergoing treatment at Harborview Medical Center.
She reportedly told emergency responders "my mom has gone crazy," Pugel said.
KIRO TV said the shooting was reported about 1:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. ET) in the Highland Park neighborhood of west Seattle.
Pugel told KOMO that multiple units responded to the emergency call. He said the responders could hear shots being fired as they arrived. A man who was later determined to be a relative broke through the police line, according to Pugel, and got into the house. Pugel said it was possible that he was the suspect's husband. After he ran into the house, two more shots were fired, Pugel said, adding that the man ran back outside and claimed the woman had shot herself.
Pugel also told KOMO that a language barrier was hampering the investigation. He said they had specialists in Asian languages on the scene to assist. Pugel told KOMO that two handguns were found on the scene.
In footage obtained from KIRO, members of the Seattle Police Gang Unit could be seen, along with officers from the King County Sheriff's office. They were sealing off the crime scene as helicopters whirred overhead.
KIRO also spoke with a neighbor who heard some of the gunshots. Bobby Miller told KIRO that he ran outside when the gunfire rang out, and saw "all hell breaking loose."

California closer to getting a budget
(CNN) -- California has created a framework for an agreement on a budget that could solve the state's $19 billion deficit.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's spokesman released a statement about the development Thursday.
"The Governor and Legislative leaders have reached the framework of an agreement, will work through the details over the weekend, and hope to come to a final agreement when they reconvene Monday," the statement said.
State legislators have been working with Schwarzenegger for two days to get the agreement, the spokesman said. No other details were provided.
California has been in a budget crisis since the summer. The state budget was supposed to have been approved by mid-June, two weeks before the new fiscal year began on July 1.
However, the budget has been stalled, putting the state in peril as the governor and lawmakers continue to squabble over how to close the $19 billion shortfall.

Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- Actress Lindsay Lohan is expected to appear in court Friday after a judge revoked her probation earlier in the week.
Judge Elden Fox revoked Lohan's probation Monday and signed a bench warrant for her arrest, but the judge is holding it until a hearing at 8:30 a.m. Friday (11:30 a.m. ET), according to Los Angeles Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini.
Lohan's supervised probation for a 2007 drunken driving conviction requires frequent drug tests. The judge warned her last month any failure could send her back to jail.
"Regrettably, I did in fact fail my most recent drug test and if I am asked, I am prepared to appear before judge Fox next week as a result," Lohan tweeted on September 17.
She spent 23 days in a court-ordered drug rehab program last month, which followed a 13-day jail stint imposed when a Los Angeles judge ruled that Lohan violated her probation.
Fox, who took over Lohan's case when she was released, imposed a new set of rules for her to follow until November. It included weekly counseling sessions for alcohol and drug rehabilitation, random drug tests and behavioral therapy.
"Substance abuse is a disease, which unfortunately doesn't go away overnight," Lohan tweeted. "I am working hard to overcome it and am taking positive steps."
Lohan tweeted that she was "doing what I must do to prevent any mishaps in the future."
"This was certainly a setback for me, but I am taking responsibility for my actions and I'm prepared to face the consequences," she tweeted.

Imam: Handling of Islamic center plan a matter of national security
(CNN) -- The religious leader behind plans to build an Islamic center and mosque a few blocks from New York's ground zero said Wednesday night that America's national security depends on how it handles the controversy.
"If we move from that location, the story will be the radicals have taken over the discourse," Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf told CNN's Soledad O'Brien on "Larry King Live."
"The headlines in the Muslim world will be that Islam is under attack."
But some critics decried his assessment.
"The whole national security thing: that's a veiled threat," Andy Sullivan, a union construction worker who wants all New York construction workers to boycott the proposed Islamic center, said on CNN's "AC 360" Wednesday night. "He's saying 'you make me move' and, guess what, the whole radical Muslim world is coming after us."
"This is a turf war," Sullivan said.
The imam, who repeatedly said his mission was to promote peace and build a bridge among faiths, said he was also speaking about "radicals" on both sides of the debate on the Islamic center. "Our national security now hinges on how we negotiate this, how we speak about it."
"The battlefront is between moderates of all sides ... and the radicals on all sides," he said.
Moving the project to another location would strengthen Islamist radicals' ability to recruit followers and will likely increase violence against Americans, the imam said.
But Rosaleen Tallon, whose firefighter brother died on 9/11, finds that notion ironic.
"On 9/11, it didn't take a mosque for extremists to come and attack the World Trade Center and kill my brother," Tallon said on "AC 360." "What I'm finding here to be very disturbing is that now ... this mosque has to go up or there will be retribution."
Rauf said that "nothing is off the table" when asked whether he would consider moving the site.
"We are consulting, talking to various people about how to do this so that we negotiate the best and safest option."
The imam told O'Brien "had I known [the controversy] would happen we certainly would never have done this."
Asked if he meant he would not have picked the location, Rauf said, "we would not have done something that would create more divisiveness."
Worry over what some observers have termed "Islamophobia" has been heightened by a Gainesville, Florida, church's plan to burn copies of the Quran on Saturday, the ninth anniversary of the 2001 attacks on New York and Washington.
Rauf said he hopes the church reconsiders. "It is something that is not the right thing to do."
With freedom comes responsibility," he said. "This is dangerous to our national security and is also the un-Christian thing to do. ... Jesus said to love your enemy. We are not your enemy."
Responding to a poll showing 71 percent of New Yorkers oppose the center's location, Rauf said he was going on television to explain his background and vision.
"I want to show them my face. Show them my track record."
The imam spoke of "a vision I've had for almost 15 years ... to establish a space that embodies the fundamental beliefs that we have as Jews, Christians and Muslims, which is to love our God and to love our neighbor -- to build a space where we have a culture of worship."
Rauf said he would continue speaking with families of those killed in the September 11, 2001, attacks. "You cannot heal a trauma by walking away from it," he said.
Opposition goes against "the fundamental American principle of separation of church and state," said Rauf, adding he has been surprised by the controversy.
The project, known as Park51, is slated to include a variety of facilities, including a prayer room, a performing arts center, gym, swimming pool and other public spaces. It is planned for a site two blocks from where the World Trade Center once stood.
A source familiar with Park51 told CNN's Allan Chernoff last week that the structure is being planned as an 11-story building. It will cover 120,000 square feet -- 10,000 feet of which would be designated for the Muslim prayer space. The developer is considering the possibility of an interfaith education/meditation/prayer space as well, the source said.
Opponents of the plan to build the center say it is too close to the site of the terror attacks and is an affront to the memory of those who died in the al Qaeda strike. Backers cite, among other things, First Amendment rights and the need to express religious tolerance.
Those who know Rauf describe him as a thoughtful man, a bridge builder who seeks to unite all faiths but who won't parse words when he sees religion used for nefarious ends.
But he has landed in controversy before.
He has chided the U.S. for killing civilians in Baghdad. He said in 2005 that the U.S. had more Muslim blood on its hands than "al Qaeda has on its hands of innocent non-Muslims."
He has also refused to accept Western governments' designation of Hamas as a terrorist group. Shortly after the 9/11 attacks, he told CBS' "60 Minutes" that "United States policies were an accessory to the crime."
Earlier this week, Rauf wrote a commentary published online by The New York Times.
"I have been struck by how the controversy has riveted the attention of Americans, as well as nearly everyone I met in my travels," Rauf wrote.
"We have all been awed by how inflamed and emotional the issue of the proposed community center has become," wrote Rauf, who had just returned from a State Department-sponsored Middle East trip to promote U.S.-Muslim relations.

The latest Hitwise report on search engine market share in the US shows Yahoo and Bing combined still managing to drive 24% of searches in the marketplace. Yet anecdotally, this doesn't stack up well with what businesses are actually managing to spend on clicks through the paid search platforms.

In the early days of fandom, studios routinely sent out cease and desist letters to fanzine publishers who were producing original works based on the characters from their favorite shows. It had a finger in the dyke effect, stopping one writer as twenty more popped up. In other words, it was useless. When video software became common and YouTube hit the web, the studios began battling another, bigger problem, that of the unauthorized use of clips from shows.

Court Rules Government Must Get Warrant to Access Cell Phone Location Data

According to the EFF , the Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia ruled that federal law allows judges the discretion to require that the government obtain a probable cause search warrant before accessing cell phone location data. Reuters reports that the U.S. Justice Department is looking into Google's acquisition of ITA software. Google made it pretty clear from the beginning that it expected heavy scrutiny.

Piper Jaffray Forecasts 50% Market Share For Android

Google Settles Buzz Lawsuit for $8.5 Million

About 7 months ago Google had a lawsuit brought against them by a Florida woman named Eva Hibnick over Google Buzz. Hibnick claimed that Google broke electronic communications laws related to the privacy of its users. Today it was announced that the company decided to pay a huge settlement to the tune of $8.5 million. Google Buzz has been riddled with criticism from its on-set and has made many changes to their privacy regulations since then.

ACLU Sues Government Over Border Laptop Searches

Google Voice Gives Users Missed Call Notifications

Google is now letting Google Voice users get notifications for missed calls. Users can get notified via their Google Voice inbox or they can opt to receive email notifications (or both). This would appear to be another step in Google bringing together your different means of communication. Google Voice already gives you a number that when called reaches you through all of your phones. Google recently rolled out the ability to make and receive calls from within Gmail.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the practice of guiding the development or redevelopment of a website so that it will naturally attract visitors by winning top ranking on the major search engines for selected keyword phrases.
Guide to Search Engine Optimization
In order to optimize your website, you need to ask yourself 3 questions:
1. How are people searching for my products and/or services?
2. Which sites are winning for those searches, and why?
3. Which searches can I win?
After you've identified a number of search phrases that are potentially winnable, you are ready to create a search engine optimization plan for your website.
First, review your website and determine whether you have significant content already developed that correlates closely with the keyword phrases you have identified. At a minimum, you need one page of well-written and useful content for each keyword family you have chosen. Each page should be entirely focused on exactly one keyword family. An excellent example is a page from an encyclopedia. For competitive keyword phrases, you will likely need to devote entire sections of your site to winning just one phrase.
Your Search Engine Optimization Plan
A complete guide to search engine optimization would be book-length, and would be out of date as soon as it was published, but here are several tips for building a website with search engine optimization in mind:
1. Every page on your site must have a unique HTML title tag, meta keywords tag, and meta description tag.

BP: Multiple companies, teams played role in oil disaster
(CNN) -- "Multiple companies and work teams" contributed to the April 20 explosion aboard the offshore Deepwater Horizon oil rig, unleashing the worst oil spill in U.S. history, BP's internal investigation of the disaster concluded Wednesday.
While BP said its team "incorrectly accepted" results of a negative pressure test aboard the rig before the blast, the internal report assigns much of the blame to rig owner Transocean.
"Over a 40-minute period, the Transocean rig crew failed to recognize and act on the influx of hydrocarbons into the well until the hydrocarbons were in the riser and rapidly flowing to the surface," the report states.
The explosion left 11 men dead and spewed millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico over an 87-day period.
BP investigators found signs of "potential weaknesses in the testing regime and maintenance management system" for the blowout preventer that failed to shut down the well at the heart of the underwater oil gusher, the report said.
"The team did not identify any single action or inaction that caused this accident," according to the report. "Rather, a complex and interlinked series of mechanical failure, human judgments, engineering design, operational implementation and team interfaces came together to allow the initiation and escalation of the accident."
Meanwhile, a federal task report Tuesday said scientists have found a decline in oxygen levels in the Gulf following the BP spill, but no "dead zones."
Levels of dissolved oxygen in deep water have dropped about 20 percent below their long-term average, according to data collected from up to 60 miles from the well at the center of the worst oil spill in U.S. history.
But much of that dip appears to be the result of microbes using oxygen to dissolve oil underwater, and the decline is not enough to be fatal to marine life, said Steve Murawski of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the head of the Joint Analysis Group studying the spill's impact.
"Even the lowest observations in all of these was substantially above the threshold," Murawski said.
The samples were collected from 419 points at varying distances from the ruptured well at the heart of the disaster and at depths as far down as 4,800 feet, the group reported. The task force is made up of NOAA, the Environmental Protection Agency and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
The undersea gusher erupted in April, releasing an estimated 4.9 million barrels (205 million gallons) of crude before being temporarily capped in July. The volume of oil -- and the amount of chemical dispersants used to break it up -- have created concerns about the long-term health of the Gulf.
The spill also delivered an economic blow to the region, where fisheries and beach resorts are major employers.
Early findings from a mid-August survey led by the University of South Florida indicated oil had settled to the bottom of the Gulf farther east than previously suspected and at levels toxic to marine life.
At about the same time, a team from Georgia Sea Grant and the University of Georgia released a report that estimates that 70 to 79 percent of the oil that leaked from the well "has not been recovered and remains a threat to the ecosystem."
The latest study "does not discuss the broad ecosystem consequences of hydrocarbons released into the environment," NOAA said. But it concludes that the oil is continuing to break up and disperse underneath the surface, making the emergency of a major oxygen-poor dead zone unlikely.
In early August, the federal government estimated that three-quarters of the oil spilled had either evaporated or been dispersed, or had been skimmed or burned off the surface.

FBI: Search under way for doll-faced bandit
Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) -- A brazen gunman wearing a porcelain doll mask robbed an Atlanta, Georgia, bank and made off with a stash of money, the FBI said.
However, authorities said the bank robber waited a little too long to put on his mask. The FBI has clear pictures of him looking nervous as he enters the bank Tuesday morning before he donned the mask.
The photos may be the key to catching him, according to authorities.
"Two very detailed photographs of the robber's face were taken by the bank's ATM machine just prior to the robber placing the mask over his face," the FBI said in a news release.
The man entered the Chase Bank, put on the porcelain doll-type mask and jumped on the counter of the bank, brandishing a silver semi-automatic handgun, the FBI said.
